How to read a hair product label
Answer first

When reading a hair product label, check the full ingredient list, directions for use, who the product is for, warnings and the batch or expiry date. Be cautious of labels that promise cures or exact results. NPRA notification numbers can be checked on the NPRA website for cosmetics sold in Malaysia.

Ingredients

Ingredients are listed from highest to lowest amount. If you have allergies, scan for known triggers such as fragrance.

Directions and warnings

Follow the amount and frequency on the label. Note any age, pregnancy or skin warnings.

Verification

For cosmetics in Malaysia, you can look up a notification number on the NPRA site. This shows the product is notified; it does not prove it works.

Questions

Is 'natural' always safer?

Not necessarily. Natural ingredients can also irritate.

What does 'dermatologically tested' mean?

It means some testing on skin was done; ask what kind.
